The Best Lego Designs

Despite being toys, Legos inspire amazing creations. LEGO artists use tiny plastic bricks to design everything from robots to architectural models. Even the engineers from the company design new elements that allow builders to build more complicated models. Erik Varszegi, a Master Builder with the Lego Group in Billund, Denmark developed a new feature this year which is the curved slope. It allows Lego users to create more slanted forms while still staying within the company’s strict colour palette. The slopes can also be used to create a more dynamic shape like an incline staircase.

While certain Lego designs are the work of professional designers, others are the result of the popular Lego Ideas set-design program. The Ideas line lets anyone create a set and then have it manufactured, and offers fame and 1 percent of sales to any designer who is able to convince 10,000 fellow designers that their creation is worthy enough to go into production. It’s no surprise that the more extravagant and impressive sets usually garner the most acclaim — particularly when they contain iconic scenes or characters from movies, TV shows or from real life.

Some of the best Lego designs are two space-themed icons: the NASA spaceship Discovery and an image of the Hubble Telescope. Each telescope comes with a plaque for display and an exact Lego version of its inventor. Other impressive models include a framed Rainbow and a Steampunk Dragon and a replica of Westminster Palace.
